please explain your answer. I have circled answers I believed were correct but I am unsure.

Option C is correct.

First we have to find the longest carbon chain. We have to start numbering from that end of carbon chain which assigns a lower number to the substituents.

Here the longest carbon chain has 6 atoms. So, its a hexane.

There are substituents on four carbon atoms of the chain- one chloro, 2 methyl groups, one isopropyl group, one methyl group. The chloro and the alkyl group have same priority. If we start numbering from left to right , then substituents will get the numbers 2, 3, 4, 6. If we start numbering from right to left , then substituents will get the numbers 2, 3, 4, 5. So, we would number the carbon chain from right to left.

Then, C-3  has Cl( 3-chloro), C-4 has isopropyl chain( 4-isopropyl), C-2 has two methyl groups, and C-5 has one methyl group. For methyl group, we can write 2,2,5-trimethyl.

Now we have to arrange the substituents in alphabetical order. So, the IUPAC name will be 3-chloro-4-isopropyl-2,2,5-trimethylhexane. (the prefix like di- , tri- are not considered)

If we follow the rules for nomenclature(explained in the above answer) , we will find that - in both the structures A and B the longest chain has 5 carbon atoms. There are substituents on C-2(one methyl group) , C-3( two methyl group). So both of them are same.
