A study on the latest fad diet claimed that the amounts of weight lost by all people on this diet had a mean of 23.5 pounds and a standard deviation of 6.9 pounds. Step 2 of 2: If a sampling distribution is created using samples of the amounts of weight lost by 62 people on this diet, what would be the standard deviation of the sampling distribution of sample means? Answer #1

Solution :

Given that,

mean = \mu = 23.5

standard deviation = \sigma = 6.9

n = 62

\mu\bar x = 23.5

\sigma\bar x = \sigma / \sqrt n = 6.9 / \sqrt 62 = 0.88

The standard deviation of the sampling distribution of sample means is \sigma \bar x = 0.88

    A powder diet is tested on 49 people, and a liquid diet is tested on 36 different people. Of interest is whether the liquid diet yields a higher mean weight loss than the powder diet. The powder diet group had a mean weight loss of 42 pounds with a standard deviation of 12 pounds. The liquid diet group had a mean weight loss of 45 pounds with a standard deviation of 14 pounds. Use the two-sample t-methods to construct a...
