If you have a 1.6 M NaCl solution and are now asked to make 50 mls of a 0.16 M NaCl solution. How would you do this? You may recognize that it is a 1:10 dilution and add (just type number) _____ mLs of 1.6M NaCl to (just type number) _____ mLs water.

Answer #1

Let the volume of solution required be V ml

Number of moles of NaCl must be same in both the solution, hence we get

M_1V_1 = M_2V_2

(1.6)(V) = (0.16)(50)

(1.6)(V) = 8

V = 5 ml

Hence the volume of stock solution required is equal to 5 ml

5 mLs of 1.6M NaCl to 45 mL's of water
