What is the role of hydrogen in these two reactions?
3 Sn2+ + Cr2O72- + 14H+ --> 3 Sn4+ + 2Cr3+ + 7H2O
5 Fe2+ + KMnO4- + 8H+ --> 5 Fe3+ + Mn2+ + 4H2O
I am asking because it is part of the overall balanced equation but it has the same oxidation number on both sides of the reaction. This goes beyond just balancing the atoms in the reaction, so please don't answer that! Can anyone please explain? Thanks!
