Question

Assume the op-amp below is used as a comparator circuit and that the op-amp is powered by a bipolar
+/- 15 V power supply. If the reference voltage Vref = -9 V and the input voltage is VI = 12 V,
determine the output voltage, VO, of the op-amp. Assume the open-loop gain, A, is very large and
consider saturation effects. Include units in your answer.

Answer #1

Since the op-amp acts as a comparator as there is no feedback connection. Output will be either (+Vcc or -Vee) depending on the input.

If input at positive terminal is greater than input at negative terminal, output will be +Vcc else -Vee.

Here input at negative terminal= 12v

at positive terminal = -9v

Since voltage at negative terminal is higher

Output Vo = -15v

What happens when vp>> vn? When vn>>vp? Consider the Op-Amp circuit in the open loop configuration. The general curve for is shown to the right. Typically Op-Amps have very high open loop gain so their linear region is pretty small. This can make them very useful for detecting when vo > Vn and vice versa. (Hmmm I wonder if this could be helpful for the night light circuit design). Positive saturation region + | ooo Negative saturation region +-- Linear...
