Digital Rights Management benefits:
The purpose of DRM is really to restrict the ease with which it is possible to copy and distribute content sufficiently that only the determined will attempt it.
And in restricting the sources of pirated content make it easier
to track down those who steal content.
DRM allows an operator to manage the entitlement to view content
and restrict what devices it can be played on.
It can even be used to limit the times when content is available
which may be useful for release embargoes or time limited viewing
windows
Limiting content availability is usually a function of the
requirements of the original content providers such as the
studio.
The operator is just interested in collecting their money and DRM only plays a secondary role in that.
DRM blocks people from many legitimate uses.making personal backups, and playing content on multiple devices are legal activities that are blocked by (some) DRM.
Another serious problem is that DRM blocks the use of accessibility devices such as screen-readers used by blind persons, or translators used by non-native speakers.
Disadvantages :
it requires that any device you target to support the particular DRM and versions that you use . Or rather you have to support multiple DRMs.
if you want to target multiple devices. Most big businesses now have to support at least three DRM flavours these days.
The problem is that DRM isn't just software, you need to trust the device you are delivering to and some devices only have trust hooks for certain DRMs.
Also some companies only support one or two DRMs in their devices and prevent others being used.
Limits usability for paying users. Prevents many practical uses which are actually legit and easy without DRM.
nflated prices. Paying users pay more money to get a worse functioning product than a possible non-DRM version, because of extra costs of development and maintenance of DRM systems.
Interestingly with CENC on HTML5 we are seeing DRM being less about encryption and more about key exchange. With CENC multiple DRMs can be used on the same content file. We should see CENC being adopted widely quute quickly.
