Question

Toxic Sludge is good for you

What new name did the public relations campaign give to “sludge?” How does this relate to our understanding of language and propaganda?

How are the news stories highlighted examples of propaganda? List the examples below and give your impression of it as being white, black, or gray propaganda:

Name some of the people and institutions who have pushed back against groups/campaigns?  What happened to them?

Consider the role of the public relations specialist as outlined in TSIGFY.  Are they the “bad guy” here?  Who is responsible for the manipulation of the public?

Are we moving toward a more democratic media, one in which individual voices aren’t silenced by mainstream media?  Consider the example of GMOs discussed by the film (2002). Consider current social and political climate (2020)

As educated individuals who are savvy consumers of media, do you think you are more or less susceptible to the pre-packaged news?  Propaganda? What makes you think this?

The film briefly profiled Edward Bernays, and his view that propaganda was a necessity in a democracy; we need propaganda to circumvent thought so as not to get in the way of executive action.  Do you agree or disagree with this perspective?  Why?

Analyzing and selecting a positioning strategy can mean the difference between success and failure for a new or existing product or service. a Powerful Pariah For decades, the worst kept secret in Hollywood was that Harvey Weinstein, motion picture mogul, confidante of Presidents and politicians, and creator of instant stardom for obscure actors and actresses, was a serial sexual harasser. Earlier, as head of Miramax Films and then as co-founder with his brother of The Weinstein Company, Harvey Weinstein was perhaps the film industry’s most powerful executive, presiding over such classic films as Good Will Hunting, Pulp Fiction, The King’s Speech, and...

What are your top 3 takaways from this article? It’s always tempting to see the present moment as the peak of chaos and disruption, whether we’re talking about politics or just how those teenagers behave today. The same is true in marketing, because in many ways that profession is always in a state of chaos and disruption. But I don’t think it’s hyperbole to apply “peak chaos and disruption” to social media marketing in the first quarter of 2018. Let’s...
