torque and static equilibrium question

7. Stability of a Drawbridge Structure A drawbridge has a horizontal surface which is supported by two cables. One cable is attached at the end and the other cable is at the midpoint. The horizontal surface is 6 m long and the wall to which the cables are attached is 6 m tall. The rotation axis is indicated by the circle at the left. (a) Find the angles between the cables and the horizontal surface. (b) Suppose the structure is designed so that each cable has the same tension T. Find the torque due to each individual cable and the total torque due to the two cables. (Express your answer in terms of T.) (c) Suppose the horizontal surface has a mass of 1200 kg. Find the value of T

I have the answers but please show ALL work neatly. (a) 63.4 degrees and 45 degrees (b) toruq total = 6.926 T (c) 5094 N

To understand the two most common procedures for finding torques when the forces and displacements are all in one plane: the moment arm method and the tangential force method. The purpose of this problem is to give you further practice finding torques in two-dimensional situations. In this case it is overkill to use the full cross product definition of the torque because the only nonzero component of the torque is the component perpendicular to the plane containing the problem. There...
