Question

A team of agricultural researchers believes that tomato plants produce more fruit in September than in August and would like to design a study to test this. They propose studying the number of fruit produced in September minus the number of fruit p in August for each plant. Let ? be mean value of this variable for all tomato plants. The researchers expect that the standard deviation for all tomato plants to be around 30. (a) Write a null and alternative hypothesis for the researchers, cither in words or in symbols (b) The researchers propose planting 400 tomato plants and recording the number of fruit produced in September minus the number of fruit produced in August for each plant. Let be the mean for this difference for the sample. For which values of i will the test reject the null hypothesis, and for which values will it fail to reject the null hypothesis? Use a 0.05 significance level for the test, and assume normality of the sampling distribution.
