Answer #1

If I was a politician deciding on a new family leave policy, 3 features I would like to promote are as follows--Firstly no statutory entitlement of leave apart from six weeks after child birth , secondly provision of only parental leave, thirdly statutory entitlement ,paid for some period , at a flat rate or income related.

These features are good because the only obligation of women is to take two weeks leave after child birth and extend leave if faced with health complications. A move away from maternity leave and provision of parental leave means that leave can be transferred partly to fathers under certain situations which are normal ,or parental leave can be divided into 'mothers only' and 'fathers only'.This way parents can divide the leave as they choose and share the responsibility of the child equally. This will enable parents to take care of their child upto a certain age.Statutory payment if made at a flat rate will induce workers to join their work instead of taking leave for long periods.

Prior to the 1980s, family and visitors were restricted to a few hours at a time and absolutely prohibited to stay overnight. When family arrived on discharge day, they were given minimal instructions on the care of invasive treatments such as bladder irrigation and told to return only if there were problems.
