Christine is the dean of students at a college. She is concerned about the amount of sleep students are getting. In particular, Christine is making an inquiry on whether students who are enrolled in the pre-med program are getting less sleep on average compared to students who are enrolled in other programs. The average amount of sleep per night for a random sample of 10 pre-med students and 10 students in other programs is recorded. Assume that the population standard deviation of hours of sleep per night is 0.6 hour for the pre-med students and 0.8 hour for the students in other programs, and that the number of hours of sleep per night for both groups of students is normally distributed. Let the pre-med students be the first sample, and let the other students be the second sample. She conducts a two-mean hypothesis test at the 0.05 level of significance, to test if there is evidence that pre-med students are getting less sleep than students in other programs.

H0:μ1=μ2; Ha:μ1≠μ2, which is a two-tailed test.

H0:μ1=μ2; Ha:μ1<μ2, which is a left-tailed test.

H0:μ1=μ2; Ha:μ1>μ2, which is a right-tailed test.

H0:μ1≠μ2; Ha:μ1=μ2, which is a two-tailed test.

A potato chip company makes potato chips in two flavors, Regular and Salt & Vinegar. Riley is a production manager for the company who is trying to ensure that each bag contains about the same number of chips, regardless of flavor. He collects two random samples of 10 bags of chips of each flavor and counts the number of chips in each bag. Assume that the population variances of the number of chips per bag for both flavors are equal...

A1A Tires claims that its tires last longer than tires manufactured by its main competitor, YYZ Tires. A consumer group studied the lifespans of tires manufactured by each manufacturer. The lifespans of a random sample of 10 tires from each manufacturer, in thousands of miles, are recorded. Assume that the population standard deviation of the lifespan for tires manufactured by A1A Tires is 3 thousand miles, while the population standard deviation of the lifespan for tires manufactured by YYZ Tires...

The average adult is supposed to get 8 hours of sleep a night. A "sleep habits" survey answered by 28 randomly selected New Yorkers contained the question "How much sleep do you get per night?" The sample average was 7.75 hours, with a corresponding sample standard deviation of 0.8 hours. Conduct a hypothesis test to see if there is evidence that New Yorkers (who live, after all, in "the city that never sleeps") on average get less than 8 hours...

Dean Halverson recently read that full-time college students study 20 hours each week. She decides to do a study at her university to see if there is evidence that students study an average of more than 20 hours each week. A random sample of 30 students were asked to keep a diary of their activities over a period of several weeks. It was found that the average number of hours that the 30 students studied each week was 21.6 hours....
