For one factor independent ANOVA:

SS(total)=SS(between)+SS(within)

df(between)=k-1

df(within)=N-k

where,k=number of groups

N=total number of subjects

Mean squares between groups,MS(between)=SS(between)/(k-1)

Mean squares within groups,MS(within)=SS(between)/(N-k)

Now,

F ratio=MS(between)/MS(within)

F ratio is ratio of variability between groups and variability within groups.
