The z-score tells us how many standard deviations away from the mean.

If z-score is 1 it tells us 1 standard deviation above the mean.

Technically it is a measure of how many standard deviations below or above the population mean a raw score.

By using z-score we can calculate the probability of the score occurring within a normal distribution.
