In 1H-NMR spectroscopy, signals are often distorted by the so-called “roof effects”. When do two signals influence each other so that you can detect the roof effect? How would two quartets be distorted if there were to be a roof effect between them? Please draw a sketch.

Answer #1

Sometimes extra lines also appear in the spectra which cannon be rationalized if only the first order effects are considered. Apart from that it also becomes difficult to assign the correct splliting and intensity ratios.

You are considering purchasing a new NMR instrument so that you can do 1H NMR. Suppose one instrument would provide a magnetic field of 10 T and another one would provide a field of 3 T. For a given molecule, would these two instruments have two different absorption wavelengths between spin states? If so, calculate the two different wavelengths that would cause absorption, ignoring the internal magnetic field of the molecule.

A researcher at Lund University is interested in studying the biological role of a so-called type I nuclear receptor (steroid receptor). To do this, the transcription factor was overexpressed by transfection of a plasmid, and then effects on gene expression in the cell were examined .A: In the current experiment, the researcher attempted to influence the function of the transcription factor by increasing its amount. Hormones and other extracellular signals often use other, more rapid-acting, mechanisms to regulate the ability...

In Mass Spectrometry (MS) the molar mass of compounds can be determined. The so-called "molecular ion" corresponds to the molecular mass when Electron Impact Mass Spectrometry (EIMS, one of several common MS techniques) is used. It is important to realize, though, that the mass detected by MS depends on the isotopes present in the molecule. The questions below try illustrate the impact of isotope distribution in a molecule. What is the molar mass of the compound shown below? What is...

I have done part a) so you don't have to draw them. Please answer b and C. Thanks Problem #1. We have learned to recognize the multiplicity patterns: singlet (1 line), doublet (2 lines), triplet (3 lines), quartet (4), pentet (5) (or quintet), hextet (6), etc. When looking at actual 'H NMR spectra, it is important to realize that the outer lines of multiplets of peaks with N > 5 are often not visible. In other words, these lines are...
