Boarding schools for the indigenous discouraged assimilation. True or false?

True. It was one of the initial efforts by the government to assimilate the natives into a European-American culture within a period of roughly two centuries. But, it was forced on the native Indians and felt like a forced Americanization.

Pearl Harbor was America’s first aerial attack. True or false?

False. There were air attacks on Oklahoma and Illinois prior to the pearl harbor incident.

Give an example of indigenous boarding school conditions.

The following are some examples:

  1. Teaching of reading, writing, and speaking of the English language - this meant that the native tongue would be lost over time.
  2. Removing groups and forming individual identities.
  3. Remove communal ownership and bring about individual ownership ideas
  4. Cut off braids worn by men, thereby stripping their cultural beliefs
  5. Change their native names to new 'white' ones.
  6. Change food habits from native ones to white ones.
  7. Celebrate 'white' festivals and shun native ones.
  8. Convert to Christianity and shun native religion.
