Performing this study in a laboratory setting would be difficult because it would involve in recreating a classroom environment, and would likely influence the helping behaviour of the students, making it difficult to generalize the observations. By observing the students in their natural setting (the classroom where they interact and learn each and every day), Jane can get a better look at the helping behaviours of students as they occur in the real world.
