An unknown compound gave a melting point of 230 °C. When the melted liquid solidified, it was melted again and found to have a melting point of 150 °C. Give a possible explanation.
One possible explanation could be that the sample liquid trapped some impurities while being solidified. Melting point is characteristic of a material’s solid-state. A solid is mostly a repeating pattern of crystalline lattices of the molecules. Intermolecular forces that make the structure rigid and stabilized hold these lattices together. A certain amount of heat is required to disrupt this structure. However, when impurities come into the picture, they weaken the lattice, thereby, less energy will be required to disrupt the structure and hence, the compound melts at lower temperatures (150℃).
Another possibility could be that the structure that melts at 230℃ is one form of the compound with a particular lattice arrangement. When the compound and solidified again, it acquired a different lattice arrangement with weakened forces holding this structure together. As a result, the new compound melted at lower temperature (150℃).

When determining the melting point of your pure benzophenone, some of the molten material had solidified high on the thermometer and wire stirrer. How would your calculated value for the molecular weight of your unknown been affected (high, low, no effect) if this benzophenone failed melt and was not a part of the final mixture in the tube?
A student thinks they may have one of two possible compounds. Compound A, has a melting point of 160°C, compound B has a melting point of 161°C. The student’s unknown melts at 160.5. The student test the unknown again and gets 160.4…160.6. How can students use compound A or B to determine the identity of the unknown?

- A student is trying to identify an unknown solid based on its melting point. She noted that the compound began to melt at 182°C and finished melting at 187°C. Knowing it is possible for there to be impurities in the sample, is this compound more likely to be camphor or hydroquinone. Explain your reasoning. A young chemist has synthesized what he believed to be acetaminophen. He measured the melting point of this newly formed compound to be 163-178°C. If...
When performing a melting point on a solid compound, 2 melting point determinations were made. One sample, which was 1 mm in height in the capillary, possessed a melting point of 150-151°C. The other sample was 25 mm in height. What would you expect the approximate melting point to be for this 25 mm sample, if the heating rate for both samples was 2 degrees per minute? (Hint: use algebra to solve the mp range) 4.
