In his best-known book, The Theory of the Leisure Class (1899), Veblen coined the concept of conspicuous consumption and conspicuous leisure.

Veblen attacked production for profit as a leading intellectual of the Progressive Era in the United States of America. His emphasis on conspicuous consumption inspired economists who opposed capitalism and technological determinism in non-Marxist ways. Veblen coined the term "conspicuous consumption" in this first work, which he defined as spending more money on goods than it is worth. He states that members of the leisure class, often associated with industry, are also those who participate in conspicuous consumption to satisfy the rest of society, whether real or perceived, through the expression of their social power and prestige. In other words, as Veblen explained, social status is earned and displayed by consumption patterns rather than what the individual makes financially. Subsequently, this behavior influences people in other social classes and, as Veblen argued, strives to emulate the class of leisure. Veblen uses eye-catching leisure, or the unproductive use of time to display social status, as the primary indicator of the leisure class. Engaging in conspicuous leisure is showing one's wealth and status openly, as productive work meant the absence of pecuniary strength and was seen as a sign of weakness. As the recreation class increased its exemption from productive work, that very exemption became honorable and actual participation in productive work became a sign of inferiority.

Conspicuous leisure worked very well in rural areas to designate social status, but urbanization made it so that conspicuous leisure was no longer an adequate means of displaying pecuniary strength. Urban life requires more apparent displays of status, wealth, and power, where conspicuous consumption becomes prominent.
