Why do you believe union membership in the US has declined? What role do you think that unions play in the workplace today?
Unions were formed in the wake of the industrial revolution to protect the rights and livelihood of oppressed workers at the hands of their employer. It was a stand against exploitation and unjust policies being utilized by the workers to maximize their profits. But now, in today's business landscape, we do not have the same conditions, which sparked the rise of unionization. The employers care for the welfare of their employees, making it their mission to not only support their endeavors in a professional capacity but in a personal position as well. For a business to realize the necessary aspect of productivity and performance, essential for them to adhere to the competitive business climate, the need to create motivation through benefits and consideration has now replaced other problematic policies and working structures that business of yesteryear followed.
This has not only reduced the need for unionization but has almost eliminated the factors which were once the backbone of the industrial society.
The role that unions play in the workplace today includes being a part of a collective movement that safeguards their interest in times of economic depression and disparity. Enable them to bargain for a better wage and create a joint stance against policies which might not be in the best interest of the employees.
