Answer:

Label Fell Off:

Label fell off is small but critical activity of Operations management. Labeling is generally of two types. First that is during the manufacturing / repacking or product in production area / repacking area and second which is during dispatches by using courier in general. If the label falls off after the product is packed or after the material has been shipped, it has serious problems for the operations. Problems which are avoidable in nature but if it happens it invites for increase in cost, loss of productivity, loss of efficiency, customer dissatisfaction, loss of potential orders and last but not the least negative goodwill. As the activity of pasting is an operational activity, it requires strict monitoring of events so that it can be avoided in future.

The problem of Label fell off can be solved in many ways; few of the ways are listed below:

  1. Quality of adhesive used at the back of label: First and foremost. Labels (whether pre-printed labels or blank labels) generally have adhesives at the back of it so that it can be pasted on the product / packaging. Labels are mostly sourced from the external packaging suppliers. Procurement department has the responsibility of having the label sourced from only those suppliers who are quality conscious and consistent in meeting quality parameters set. The adhesive used in the label should be of good quality and the quality control department should get it checked whenever new batches of labels arrive from the suppliers. From time to time, quality control department should also take random samples from the existing stock in hand & check the same as by the passing time, adhesive tend to dry and do not paste the surface. If adhesive of label is not good, there is higher possibility of label felling off the packaging.
  1. Inappropriate pasting of label: Even if the adhesive of label is of good quality, if it is not pasted properly using the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), there are chances of label felling off later. Label can be pasted on the packaging or product either manually or by using machines. In both the cases the pasting should be proper. It should not happen that Label is not pasted in the designated place of package or product; also it is not fully touching the surface of the packaging. If this happens the label can start peeling off & may fell later. Proper training of packaging staff should be done & they should be made aware about the potential losses if the label fells off. Quality control department should also check if the activity is done properly.

  1. Unclean surface: There could be chances that though the pasting is at proper place & touches the surface properly but since the surface where label is pasted is having dust or is wet or is oily, the adhesion may not happen proper, resulting in label falling off. It is the duty of Operations team to train the staff doing the pasting activity. If it is automated process, the parameter of machine pasting the labels should be accurately fed. Any dirt, wet surface, oily surface, packaging with material spillage should be checked first before pasting is done. Quality control department should check the pasting once done to make sure it is fool proof.
