Can women experience "mother hearing"? Some research suggests that a woman's sense of hearing becomes more sensitive after giving birth. Thirty women volunteer for an overnight sleep lab study. During the night researchers expose them to a soft sound and increase the volume until they wake up. The researchers recorded the volume in decibels (dB) for each woman when she woke up. The means and SS for each group are in the table below.
| Mothers | Non-mothers |
|---|---|
| n = 15 | n = 15 |
| M = 47 | M = 52 |
| SS = 960 | SS = 894 |
Is there a significant difference in health between mothers and non-mothers? Use a two-tailed test with α = 0.05.
Make sure you report a) the critical value of t, b) the pooled variance, c) the estimated standard error, d) the obtained value of t, and e) your decision (reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis. Also f) report the effect size and g) calculate the 99% confidence interval.
