In a sample of children given a new flu vaccine, a large number of the children develop a neurological disease. Parents claim the vaccine causes the disease. What is the "same old problem" when applied to the study?
The problem with this study is that it is concluding causation on the basis of a positive relation whereas correlation never implies causation. As in this case, there can be a third variable which is affecting the rate of disease spread and because of that, large number of the children in flu vaccine treatment group develop a neurological disease.

A pediatrician has administered a flu vaccine to 1,000 children in a local community. The average number of children who contract the flu after they get vaccinated is 4 cases per 1,000 children. What is the probability that none of the 1,000 children will contract the flu this season? Hint: Use a Poisson distribution with λ = 4.
In a large clinical trial, 393,888 children were randomly assigned to two groups. The treatment group consisted of 198,120 children given a vaccine for a certain disease, and 38 of those children developed the disease. The other 195,768 children were given a placebo, and 116 of those children developed the disease. Consider the vaccine treatment group to be the first sample. Complete parts (a) through (d) below. a. In a clinical study, 4200 subjects were vaccinated with a flu vaccine manufactured by growing cells in fertilized chicken eggs. Over a period of roughly 28 weeks, 32 of these subjects developed the flu. a. Find the observed statistic. Use the proper notation (7 or ). [2pts) b. Verify that the sample size is large enough to use the normal distribution to construct a confidence interval for the proportion of the population that were vaccinated with the vaccine but still...

In the Marshmallow test" video, little children (3 years old - 7 years old) were put alone in a room with a single marshmallow and told that if they did not eat the marshmallow before the researcher came back into the room (in 15 minutes), they would be given a second marshmallow. Suppose you wonder whether the age of the child played a role in self-control or delayed gratification. In planning that experiment, it is crucial that you: identify a...
