uname command in linux

The command uname is used to display the information about the system.

The general syntax is

uname [OPTIONS]

Output of $ uname -a

  • -a : prints all the system information in the followinf order: kernel name, network node host name, kernel release date, kernel version, machine hardware name, hardware platform, type of processor, hardware platform, operating system.

The output will display as;

From this output we can understand

  1. Kernel name: Linux

  2. Network node host name: robin-Lenovo-G500s

  3. kernel release date: 4.15.0-74-generic

  4. kernel version: #84-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 19 08:06:28 UTC 2019

  5. machine hardware name: x86_64

  6. type of processor: x86_64

  7. hardware platform: x86_64

  8. operating system: GNU/Linux
