Important characteristics and qualities of successful CIOs

To be a successful CIO, it is important not just to get the job done, but also to meet the team’s expectations, strategize and implement IT policies and drive business growth. Some of the most important skills required to be a successful CIO include:

• Technologically up to date
• Leadership qualities, ability to motivate not just the team but also peers
• Strategic and visionary outlook to support growth of the organization
• Willingness to learn continuously
• Communications skills, both written and verbal
• Integrity
• Customer focussed

I believe I possess most of the skills outlined above. I keep myself technologically up to date by keeping myself abreast of emerging technologies. I am tech savvy, always open to new ideas and ready to learn on a continuous basis. Just like any other profession, excellent communications skills are of paramount importance. I am comfortable and effective in communicating with not just my colleagues but also my superiors. A person has to be of the highest integrity not just as a CIO, but also in personal life. I display a strong moral character, do not lack in integrity and I am ready to admit whenever I am wrong.

Some of the areas where I believe there is scope for learning and improvement is working on developing strategic business acumen and being customer focussed. I believe these skills can be developed and nurtured while working on the job.
