An engineer wants to estimate the reliability of a structure. The distributions of the dead load, the live load and the resistance of the structure are Gaussian and independent. The dead load is normally distributed with a mean of 18 MPa and a standard deviation of 5 MPa. The mean and standard deviation of the live load are 22 and 12 MPa, respectively. The structure is made of high performance concrete with a mean resistance of 60 MPa and a standard deviation of 5 MPa. Knowing that failure is the event in which the total loads exceed the resistance,

Determine: 1) The probability of failure of the structure.

2)The engineer would like to explore the effect of multiplying the loads and resistance by safety factors. Recalculate the probability of failure after applying the following factors of safety: 0.8 for the resistance and 1 .1 for the loads.

    1. (20 points) A beam is subject to a load of 500 kip ft (this is the mean load, statistically speaking). The nominal resistance of the member is 700 kip ft (this is the mean resistance). It is estimated that the standard deviation values for the load and resistance are 80 kip ft and 20 kip ft, respectively. Find the approximate probability of failure. Recall that if Rm and Qm are the mean resistance and load, respectively, and V and...

Please Solve Part B Solve Part B Part B What is the probability that the max wind pressure will exceed 30? A large parabolic antenna is designed against wind load. Durng a wind storms, the maximum wind induced pressure on the antenna, P, is calculated as: 2 where C is the drag coefficient, R is the air mass density, V maximum wind speed, and P is the pressure. C, R, and V are statistically independent lognormal random variables with the...
