Write an explanation for the effect of acid and base on the solubility of salicylic acid in water.
Salicylic acid is a weak acid. So, it's solubility is low in pure water. It ionized partially and gives H+ ions in the water. If, the solution is acidic that means it already contains H+ ions. So the ionization of salicylic acid will be low. If the solution is basic that means it contains OH- ions. So, the H+ ions from salicylic acid and the OH- ions from the base will combine and form water. So, there will be a scarcity of H+ ions in the solution which will drive more salicylic acid molecules to ionise and produce more H+ ions. So more and more salicylic acid will get dissolved.
So, in acidic medium, the solubility of salicylic acid will decrease and in the basic medium it will increase.

To increase the water solubility of resorcinol or salicylic acid, 3M NaOH is used to dissolve them. Why do they dissolve better in NaOH than in water? If aniline were used instead of resorcinol or salicylic acid, what modification in the procedure would you make to help dissolve aniline in water?

75. Salicylic acid, HOC6H4CO2H, and its derivatives have been used as pain relievers for a long time. Salicylic acid occurs in small amounts in the leaves, bark, and roots of some vegetation (most notably historically in the bark of the willow tree). Extracts of these plants have been used as medications for centuries. The acid was first isolated in the laboratory in 1838.
