Port-Scanning
This can be defined as a method to determine the open ports in the network. Ports are the doors of the computer through which the information comes in and out. Port scanning a network exposes the ports in the network that are listening (open to receive information). Also, it determines the presence of the firewalls in the path of sending information.
There might be several reasons why the US government does not have a law to ban Port-scanning activities as:
- Port Scanning appears to be a malicious activity but it is not always so. It is a very useful method for System administrators to diagnose network security policies and configurations.
- However, Port scanning is not illegal in the US but scanning anyone's network without prior permission is not allowed and can imply legal charges and imprisonment.
- Port scanning is also essential in the IT industry to diagnose network security to find the loophole in the network.
