The IS Department and the Associated Opportunities

The IS department is considered the most integral department for companies that especially deals with data. Now every company has some form of information which is classified but as the outsourcing services industry starts to spread its wings the scope of the IS departments in such companies has greatly widened. We will here be taking example of on such company.

Now the major roles in an IS department in such companies mainly consist of –

Systems Analyst – One who does requirement gathering and understands the business problem

Programmer – One who does the development and testing

Computer Engineer – One who designs the systems

Admin Team – Operators, Database Admins and Support Analysts

The Leadership team – CIO – Chief Information Officer – Owns the portfolio. Functional Managers – Managing programs and lastly Project Manager

The other very integral part of any IS department is the Information Security Officer who mangers data security and regulatory norms

With analytics coming into picture the new roles such as clod manager and data scientists are also becoming part of the IS department.

To find a role in the IS department one has to be well versed in the not just in systems and technology but also in regulatory norms, project management and ability to work in dynamic systems. This allows the department to remain agile and updated with the world systems. Hence I would recommend that one acquires skill in regulatory management and one type of technology at least to ensure that one remains relevant. The other aspect that one needs to be aware of is how a project works and hence it becomes necessary to have some qualification on the basics of project management.

The leaders in the IS department mostly work on certain metrics and projects. The metrics cold be anything from management of risks to effectiveness to efficiency etc. and projects can be anything from management of small functionalities to whole epics in agile management.

The other employees work closely on the ground to ensure deliveries and support to the operations of the organization. The leaders look at the holistic picture while the others look at the task at hand. This ensures that all works are carried in sync and are controlled well. The scope of the IS departments is increasing and hence the opportunities in this department are always in demand and increasing with the evolving technologies.
