In a 0.1 M solution of TAPS at 7.9 pH, What fraction of TAPS has its sulfonate group in the R-SO3H form?
pka of TAPS = 8.44
we have buffer pH formula given by Henderson equation
pH = pka + log [conjugate base form] / [ acid form]
here acid form is RSO3H and its conjugate base form is RSO3-
substituting we get
7.9 = 8.44 + log [ RSO3-] / [RSO3H]
[RSO3-] / [RSO3H] = 10^ ( 7.9-8.44)
[RSO3-] /[RSO3H] = 0.2884
given TAPS Molarity is 0.1 M , hence [RSO3-] + [RSO3H] = 0.1
solving above two equations we get [RSO3H] =0.0776 M and [RSO3-] = 0.0224 M
fraction of RSO3H form = [RSO3H form] / [TAPS] = ( 0.0776 M / 0.1M) = 0.776

In a 0.1 M solution of glycine at pH 9.0, what fraction of glycine has its amino group in the —NH + 3 —NH3+ form? I know the answer, but can someone explain why the fraction is .25/(1+.25)) x100% = 20%? Where did the (1+.25) come from?
In a 0.1 M solution of glycine at pH 9.0, what fraction of glycine has its amino group in the -NH3+ form? I can't figure out how to get from 0.25=[NH2]/[NH3] to (0.25/[0.25+1]) x 100 = 20% Why do you divide by (0.25+1) ?
This question has two parts: What is the pH of a 0.1 M solution of HF? b) What is the percent dissociation of a 0.1 M HF solution? PLEASE SHOW WORK TYPED. It's hard to understand some handwritings so this is the easiest way I can ensure I can actually read the answer and understand it.
