A therapist frequently goes to a coffee shop near his home, one day the therapist goes there and a client the therapist worked with for a number of years is now working there. The client ended therapy six months ago due to no longer needing it and they parted on good terms. The client smiles at the therapist and says "It's good to see you." They chat for a few minutes, then the therapist pays for her coffee and leaves.

Would it be ethical for the therapist to continue going to this coffee shop? Why or why not?

Answer #1

In the above scenario:

  • The therapist was a frequent customer of the coffee shop even before her client started working there.
  • The therapeutic relationship between the client and therapist ended six months ago due to no longer needing and they parted on good terms.
  • Therapist had paid for her coffee.

On the basis of above point it's not unethical if the therapist continue going to this shop. Therapist must take necessary precautions to avoid any potential harm to the client's integrity and confidentiality, and, if there's any potential harm, then she should discontinue going to this coffee shop.
