A 8000 kg car heading north collides at an intersection with a 12,000 kg truck heading west. If they lock together and travel at 30 m/s at 28° north of west just after the collision, how fast was the west bound car initially traveling?

Answer #1

By Conservation of momentum in x-direction

-MtruckVtruck=(Mcar+Mtruck)(-VCos28)

12000*Vtruck=(8000+12000)(30Cos28)

Vtruck= 44.147 m/s
