Maleic anhydride reacts with alpha- phelandrene, an component of eucalyptus oil via [4+2] cycloaddition reaction (Diels Alder reaction). The product of the reaction is shown below:

The product contains 11 non- equivalent Hs. Hence in 1H NMR, there will be 11 signals. The non- equivalent Hs are shown below ( indicated by a,b,....)

6 Ha (doublet)

3 Hb (singlet)

1 Hc (septet)

1 Hd (doublet of doublet)

1 Hk ( doublet)

He, Hf, Hg, Hi, Hj ( doublet of doublet)
