The surface of the magnesium ribbons has been oxidized. Will this result in a higher or lower magnesium to oxygen ratio when the magnesium combustion reaction is carried out without further polishing the metal?

Answer - The magnesium to oxygen ratio would be lower.  

The mass of magnesium metal measured initial is not exactly the mass of magnesium since there is the oxidation of magnesium and formed magnesium oxide. The actual mass of magnesium is less than the required and there is already magnesium oxide is present, so it gives the higher mass of product magnesium oxide. The mass of oxygen determines by using the formula as follows,

Mass of O = Mass of magnesium oxide - the mass of Mg.

The mass of magnesium oxide is higher than actual, hence the mass of oxygen also gets higher. The mass of oxygen is higher means the moles of oxygen is higher than magnesium and the ration of magnesium to oxygen ratio would be lower.

Thus, the magnesium to oxygen ratio would be lower, when the magnesium combustion reaction is carried out without further polishing the metal.
