You are asked to design a high resolution, and high definition digital camera with panoramic capability. You have decided that your camera should allow 12,800 x 2,700 resolution. In addition, you have decided that your camera should accommodate up to a 900,000 distinct colors. Assuming, you don’t have a method of compressing the images, how much memory is needed to store a picture taken by this camera? Show your work step by step.

To calculate uncompressed image size formula is:

Image size = Resolutions * bit depth

Here resolution = 12800x2700

Each bit can store upto 2 distinct colors. So 900000 distinct colors we require log2(900000)bits which is called bit depth.

bit depth = log₂(900000) = 19.77 => 20bits (approximately).

So image size = 12800x2700x20 = 691200000 bits = 86400000 bytes ( 1 byte = 8bits)

= 84375 Kb [ 1kb = 1024 bytes ]

= 82.39 Mb [ 1Mb = 1024 Kb ]
