2. Why is it not necessary to protect a 50% NaOH(aq) solution from CO2?

1./Sodium hydroxide is hygroscopic i.e. it absorbs moisture froom the atmosphere.since Atmosphere contains carbon dioxide so sodium hydroxide being basic in nature combines with the carbon dioxide (CO2) present in Atmosphere being acidic in nature cobines with each other performing neutralisation reaction and forming sodium carbonate and water as it's product.

2NaOH+CO2>>>>>Na2CO3+H2O

2. In 50%NaOH sodium carbonate is insoluble so carbonate free solutions can be obtained and hence there is no need to protect it from carbonate.
