While boiling potatoes for dinner in salted water, the pot boils over and you notice that the flame on your gas burner turns bright yellow-orange. How would you explain the appearance of a color in the previously blue flame?

The first reason is blue flame indicates hotter flame while the yellow orange flame indicates cooler flame which is having less temperature due to incomplete combustion of gas.

And the second reason is, you are boiling potatoes in salt water. This salt has Sodium ions in it. When this sodium ions come in contact with the flame, it gives orange yellow colour to flame.

Thus, presence of sodium ions give bright yellow orange flame.
