Answer #1

I have designated one room or area as a study space. It took me some time to get used to it. I enter into ‘study-mode’ sooner upon entering the space, which is especially valuable before tests or paper writing. Moving between libraries and coffee shops and friends’ apartments can be mentally jolting since I always have new distractions to overcome.

Studying can be sometimes stressful for me so I have customized to my taste, so it’s best done with a comfatorable study desk and chair and decór that relaxes me. I get comfortable to study but not very comfortable to sleep there. I usually arrange things in a way that when I have to sit for a long time everything I need is at a hand's distance; for eg, a water bottle, required study material and stationery. Sometimes I take things for snacking at the study space, but I avoid having meals there. I do have a drawer that holds a snack or two. But, I limit the storage to a one or two otherwise I am tempted to overeat.

I prefer natural light though I do not like looking directly into the light because it is painful and distracting. For reading purposes, it is better to have the light behind. The desk is position in such a way that there is adequate light but it is not distracting. I use curtains to control the light entering the room.

Though people like listening to music when they study, I prefer I bit of silence and occasionally some music. As the research suggests that if the study for test preparation, learning should happen in a similar environment of where the test occurs this helps in recalling. Therefore, a study place should not be too cozy or comfortable. I customize the study place according to my needs, I make it a bit more comfortable when I have the luxury of time for example when essay writing and creative thoughts are needed I tend to bit distracted. However, when it is a learning for a test, I try to shut out distractions as much as possible and try to do it in short sittings, which means I take breaks after one sitting.

I prefer plants, as they refresh my eyes. Also as proven, by research that certain houseplants improve indoor air quality, and something green and alive just makes a study space more serene. In my designated study space, I got low-maintenance houseplants in beautiful pots, like aloe or a snake plant. As long as I remember to water it, it makes my environment more peaceful, and easier to breathe, which helps me think better.

Lastly, I try to make study a positive experience. Though the study can have a lot of negative connotations, it is best to keep in mind that it is a kind of learning. I like to pin movie/book quotes around my study.  With a designated study space, helps me associate learning. And with a designated place for the study if I leave for a break I come refreshed to study. I keep my phone on silent mode and usually away from the table whenever I study. It is on the table if I am expecting an important call.  Also, the most difficult part is to keep the study area as de-cluttered as possible.
