will businesses that have take then time, effort and investment to understand the infrastructure of our sales and use tax system in this country be the winners?
Home Depot has survived in the Internet age by showing customers the basics of to do it yourself projects? Best Buy has survived by having really knowledgeable sales people who can show you how to effectively use all those features that you know are present on TV's and Appliances but you have no idea how to effectively use. And competitive brick and mortar companies have learned how to effectively integrate online sales into their overall marketing strategy.
As in any other aspect of business, will those companies, online or brick and mortar, who best understand and meet the needs of their customers be the winners in the end?
Yes the businesses which take time, effort and investment are successful in the long run. The home depot survival depends on the do it yourself, which made people more attached to the things which they make themselves. Thus it is the new idea which was started in order to do things differently. Whenever people make things themselves they love the final product as well as the brand. Thus this is the unique idea to make the business go seamless.
The idea taken up by best buy was also good in terms of providing information for the people. In this way, we can make people more interactive and let them value their product and get the best out of their product and hence people would understand the brand and the value which they will be getting after paying certain money.
Bricks and Mortar also took a good idea of making things online as this business was earlier just offline and no one thinks of taking it online but this was the company which did things differently and made their name in the business.
Thus after taking the effort and investment in the business, we can enhance the business and become a winner.

Do you know anyone in sales? How about anyone who owns their own business (then they HAVE to be in sales)? What kind of training have they had? Take a look at ONE of the network marketing businesses (Amway, Quixtar, Herbal Life, Pampered Chef, etc) and use the companies' web sites to get more information on their sales process, sales force structure and how the company recruits and trains it's salespeople, then share it with the class. Do they do...
All too often, I have seen senior managers stick their heads into the sand when, instead, they need to take their heads out of the sand and be redirected to where the roses are... and smell the darn things. Where are the roses? At the customers. I have often espoused in both undergraduate and graduate marketing courses that it is all about the customer. The concept of customer-centric companies is bannerized everywhere. Executives speak it, marketers ballyhoo it, and textbooks...
