Answer #1

Generally in workplaces we do have electricity, normally the voltage we get in our work areas would be around 230V if it is running on a single phase or 400V if it is running on a three phase. So the example we are going to discuss will pertain to this category only. Although some industries and factories might receive more than 400V as per their requirement, but we are going to talk about only normal voltage (230 or 400) received by an office.

Dealing with electricity is a hazard in the following situations:

  • If the wires are not properly sealed and taped
  • If there are faults which could or probably would cause fire
  • Explosive atmosphere where electricity could be a probable cause for the ignition of fire.

In an organization it is the responsibility of the employer to look after the cables and electrical wires and areas which are particularly prone to accidents.

Reducing the risk:

Using controlled and portable machinery or equipment for the organizational purpose and thus reducing the voltage. Making sure that all the fuses and wires are correctly fitted into their respective sockets and properly sealed respectively. Using earthed equipments for preventing any voltage disturbances or shocks. Making necessary changes to the work environment as and when required for reducing the risk through electricity. And continuously monitoring the accident prone areas in the workplace.

OSHA had already issued standards regarding the usage of electricity in the workplace by the name " Electrical Safety standards" which mentioned lightning and earthing protection systems are needed in the workplace for ensuring the safety of the employees, building structures etc.

Organization should conduct a study on the electric safety standards issued by OSHA and adhering to them accordingly by using the specified cables, specified lights and electrical protection systems etc.
