Say a study determines that the amount of time that college students on a given campus workout each week changes from school to school. You randomly interview 60 West State University students. You find that the average weekly gym time is 3 hours and that the standard deviation is 1 hour.

i. Is the sample mean normally distributed? Why or why not?

ii. Your friend believes that the average gym time at West State is 2.5 hours. Test your friend's hypothesis at a 5% significance level. Clearly state the null hypothesis, the rejection region, and your conclusion.

iii. Calculate the p-value. Give a range if you cannot obtain the exact value.

iv. Suppose that you know the population standard deviation is now 1. Find the 90% confidence interval for the population mean. State the general formula, fill in the appropriate values, and find the exact boundaries of the interval.

A researcher surveys middle-school students on their study habits. She finds that in a random sample of 28 middle-school students, the mean amount of time that they spend working on the computer each night is 2.4 hours with a standard deviation of 0.92 hours. She uses the sample statistics to compute a 95% confidence interval for the population mean - the the mean amount of time that all middle-school students spend working on the computer each night. Total sleep time of college students. A recent survey describes the distribution of total sleep time among college students as approximately Normal with a mean of 6.78 hours and standard deviation of 1.24 hours.3 Suppose that we select a college student at random and obtain his or her sleep time. This result is a random variable X because, prior to the random sampling, we don't know the sleep time. We do know, however, that in repeated sampling, X will have...
