According to the Bronsted-Lowry acid base theory,when a species(molecule or ion) gives ion,it is an Acid and the species that will be formed after giving away a proton is the CONJUGATE BASE of that Acid.

Similarly when a species accept the proton is a BASE and the product formed after the acceptance of the proton is the CONJUGATE ACID of that Base.
