Having grown up in a town very much like the one in which she taught and having taught in her school for 5 years, how is it that Melissa didn't think about what she knew to be a streak of deep-seated conversation present in the community?

A person does not think about the deep-seated conversation present in the community either when he is not bothered about it and feels is killing his productive time or when he feels that even if he gets involved in it. So we can say that this will be the major driving force in someone's involvement in any community talks. The third reason might have been the fact that Melissa was carrying some dark secret with her and feared if she mingles with the people, it might be out with the wider audience, so she tried to never be involved in any such thing.
