Ptolemaic astronomical system is also known as geo-centrism. It is basically a description of system of universe. It says that earth exist at the center of this universe. It also says that sun, moon and other planets revolve around the earth.

He also considers that the earth is stationary and remain positioned at single position. His concept of universal system was well accepted by Christianity because same description can be observed in christian books also. They found Ptolemy's view in perfect synchronisation with their own ideologies.

Hence they welcomed and supported this system. on the other hand, Copernicus challenged the Ptolemy. He said that earth is not stationary. It rotates on its axis. He also proposed heliocentric model of universal system. This model says that the sun remain at the center of universe.

All other planets and earth itself revolve around the sun. He had no tools to prove his theory. He was challenging the christian beliefs. Galileo proved his theory with the help of his instruments in later period. Both of them were completely disregarded by those who were firm believer of Christianity.
