In beta decay, the atomic number increases by 1 and the atomic mass remains the same. So, carbon-14 produces N-14 after beta decay.

In alpha decay, the atomic number is reduced by 2 and the atomic mass is reduced by 4. So, Uranium-238 produces Th-234 after alpha decay.
