In electrolysis, ELECTRICAL ENERGY is converted to CHEMICAL energy.

Thus, electrical energy is supplied to the electrolyte with the help of a voltage source such as battery. Thus , battery is the source of electrical energy.

The battery and the electrolyte are connected with the help of mettalic plates which are called electrodes.

The electrode connected to the positive terminal of the battery is the ANODE (Oxidation takes place) and the electrode connected to negative terminal of the battery is the CATHODE(reduction takes place ).

On electrolysis, cations gets deposited at cathode and anions gets deposited at anode (or the gases like hydrogen ,oxygen and chorine gets deposited at anode).
