Problem 1

A gas of nitrogen molecules is at a temperature of 1000K. In this case molecule has 3 translational, 2 rotational, and 2 vibrational degrees of freedom per molecule, i.e. a total of 7.

1.7. The gas undergoes a cyclic process which can be represented by a circle on a PVdiagram. Illustrate graphically the locations of the highest and lowest temperatures in the process.

1.8. Consider a cycle which has a shape of a rectangle whose vertices are defined by V, 2*V, and P, 2*P in the PV-diagram. Find the ratio of the highest and lowest temperatures in the cycle.

1.9. Assuming the cycle operates as an engine, calculate the engine efficiency.

1.10. If you are to build the most efficient engine using the highest and the lowest temperatures available from #9 how would the cycle look like on a PV-diagram [you need to indicate both cycles]

1.11 What is the efficiency of the most efficient cycle in 1.10?

Consider a monoatomic ideal gas undergoing the following cycle: starting point (a), pressure increases at a constant volume reaching point (b), then the gas expands adiabatically until pressure reaches the initial value (point c), and then the gas is compressed at a constant pressure until the volume reaches the initial value back to point (a). The amount of gas is 1 mole. Monoatomic gas means it has only 3 degrees of freedom and the adiabatic constant gamma is 5/3. Sketch...

Please answer the two blank boxes! A heat engine with 0.227 moles of a monatomic gas undergoes the cyclic procedure shown in the pV diagram on the right. Between stages 3 and 1 the gas is at a constant temperature, and between 2 and 3 no heat is transferred in or out. The temperature of the gas at stage 2 is 375 K. kPa What is the type of each process in the cycle? Between 1 and 2 isisochoric Between...

Problem 1 N molecules of carbon dioxide gas Co, (considered as an ideal gas) undergo the cycle shown in the P-V diagram on the right. As a reminder, a CO, molecule has all atoms on a line. Assume that all processes are quasistatic and that the temperature remains such that rotational degrees of freedom are activated, but vibrational degrees of freedom are frozen out. Capital letters A, B, C represent the states at the corners of the cycle, while lowercase...
