Answer #1

The major purposes of a change management plans are

  • Communication: they serve as a communication tool to all stakeholders involved in the change process
  • Engagement: they help the stakeholders get engaged with the overall change process through clear understanding and shared goals
  • Training: the plan includes the requirement for training before and after the change process
  • Support: the support to the employees, managers, and other stakeholders for the change is documented and codified
  • Metrics: the change management success or failure is often determined upon several metrics. These are defined in the change management plan
  • Transition: the plan describes the overall transition process

When it comes to the change management process, the process itself can follow various frameworks. One of the most popular framework is Kotter’s change management model. Using this the process includes the following steps

  • Creating a sense of urgency
  • Building a coalition
  • Forming strategic vision and initiatives
  • Enlisting volunteers for change
  • Enable actions for change by removing barriers
  • Generate short term wins
  • Sustain the pace/acceleration of change
  • Institute change in the whole scale

One of the key purpose of change is to achieve a goal of the organization. For example, the organization may realize that certain aspect of their organization is weak and a change is required to make it stronger. However, there needs to be clear milestones and timeline for the change. Otherwise it is possible for the change process to prolong for indefinite period. Considering that change process by itself is considerably disruptive, a long terms process is not beneficial. This is why there needs to be a defined date for completion and a date to stop accepting changes.
