Amazon has bought a fleet of all-electric delivery vans from a start-up automotive company Rivian. The vans will be explicitly designed for Amazon aesthetically and technologically. These vehicles will exclusively be for Amazon only and will not be offered to other buyers. Rivian, which was compared to Tesla when it first came out because they focused on hybrid vehicles, changed to making electric vehicles in 2011. Rivian’s vehicles, however, have larger battery capacities than Tesla vehicles and can last for longer mileage. With this new acquisition of vehicles, Amazon’s fleet of delivery van will rival that of UPS. The article even states that “In the long run, Amazon could hope to eliminate drivers altogether, and let the vans pilot themselves” (Davies, 2019).

These electric delivery vans will be very beneficial for the ecosystem in eliminating gas emissions. Also, these vehicles will help Amazon cut down on fuel cost. The idea that in the future these vehicles could drive themselves could revolutionize package delivery. I also wonder what advantage this will be for Amazon since Rivian is only providing these vans exclusively to Amazon.   The fact that the vehicles will be eco-friendly I believe should at least draw to Amazon more stakeholders that are focused on climate control and air-pollution issues.

I agree with the content shared in the article. The all electric vehicles is the future for the society. As the Amazon is expanding its wings to new geographies, it is important to look for ways which are environmental friendly and fits in to the regulatory requirement of other country. As the e-commerce industry is expanding, the electric vehicles demand will go up in order to control pollution in the environment. Amazon is likely to hold largest number of fleets in future. Also, the number of parcels delivered in a day is likely to cross DHL or UPS. The driver-less vehicles for delivery is also very critical due to rising wage trend. The Amazon is also experimenting with drones for delivery of small parcels in the nearby location. This is helping them to speed up the delivery. Also, it is proving to be cost effective as they are low in maintenance and their turnaround is much faster. With high traffic scenario in busy cities like New York etc., it is giving even better results due to faster delivery to customer. In all, it is a win-win situation for Amazon and environmental enthusiast as it is the way for future business operation.
