In each of the following situations, Algernon says something to Hortense. There are three possible responses that she gives. One addresses the issue well, one does not address the issue, and one is in the middle. Rank the options best to worst, with 1 being the best and 3 being the worst. No partial credit.
1. Hortense, I think you would like having a new bicycle. Some good ones are on sale.
A. Is the sale at an expensive shop? Being on sale isn’t the same thing as being affordable.
B. I’ve noticed that you like “shopping” with other people’s money.
C. You don’t need a “good” bike to get around campus, and that’s all I do. A clunker will do.
2. Hortense, you might think twice about the extended warranty. It’s expensive and doesn’t cover much.
A. I always buy the warranties. They are part of the package.
B. I did think twice. I did some balance of considerations reasoning, and this decision won out.
C. You see scams everywhere, don’t you?
3. Hortense, have you gone to Final Friday yet? We really should go.
A. And we should go to Small Business Saturday, and Wacky Wednesday, and probably everything else. You just like the name.
B. I’ve gone to other celebrations downtown, and they weren’t worth much.
C. Is that the night to celebrate local art? Why not?
4. Hortense, let’s go to the new Marvel movie tonight. Everyone is going.
A. Movies are too expensive.
B. The last time I went to a movie, I fell asleep and snored.
C. If all of your friends were doing something dangerous, would you do it too?
5. Hortense, I think that aspirin and a cup of coffee would help your headache.
A. Are you a doctor now? Have you thought that maybe some people are allergic to aspirin and hate coffee?
B. I’m out of aspirin and coffee.
C. I’ve already tried that, and I still have a headache.

Now imagine yourself listening intently to each of the clients quoted below. First use the “You feel . . . because . . .” formula; then use your own words. Try to make the second response sound as natural (as much like yourself) as possible. After you use your own words, check to see if you have both a “you feel” part and a “because” part in your response. Case 1. A 28-year-old woman is talking about her job with...
write a 150 words reply to this post in your own words . Culture is a very important factor in a person’s behavior. The culture a person grows up in really shapes who they are as a person and influences their behaviors in society. An example of this is something that I spoke about in one of the previous discussion boards, but basically it is the idea behind kiss greeting. In other countries it is common and “normal” for people...
What do you think about the following paragraphs? I really enjoyed watching the video about the ethical impacts that a code can make in real world. Clarissa explained many points with proper reasoning and examples that really persuaded me. The first point she made that I found appealing was that the programmers should think about the worst case scenario that their program can create and write the code according to it. She provided the example of the "Volkswagen Scandal" in...
Discussion Topics, Mohr Chapter 7, Spirituality in Psychiatric Care Discussion Topics Learning Objective 1. While caring for a mental health client, the client begins to discuss issues he is having related to religion and spirituality. He says, “My parents go to church all the time and because I don’t go, they think I am not a good person. I believe in God, I just don’t believe in everything my parents’ religion teaches.” In your opinion, what is the difference between...

Case 1. A first-year college student is talking to a counselor in the Center for Student Services. She has been talking about some of the difficulties of adjusting to college life. She comes from a small town and is attending a large state university. She speaks openly and seems to be in good spirits; she even smiles at times: “My new friends seem so much worldlier and confident than me. Most of them have traveled out of the country, have...
Jack Adam’s mind wandered as he sat outside Bill Squire’s office awaiting his yearly performance review… [Jack thinking.] Well, it’s 8:25. Five more minutes to go. Fifteen years with the company, and this new district manager, Squire, couldn’t even call and request this meeting personally. These annual performance appraisals are tough enough, and here I’ve got a bad sales record for the past 12 months. Surely he’ll be able to understand that the sales decreases were a result of the...
Commentaries: In each discussion thread, each student will offer a substantive commentary on one of the original posts that has not received any response yet. The commentary should include at least two of the following: a) a Comment (e.g., “I agree that… because…”; “I disagree that… because…”), b) a Connection (e.g., “I also have read/seen/heard/thought that…”), and c) a Question (e.g., “I wonder why/how/who/what/when/where…”). The commentary must demonstrate a thoughtful reading and analyses of both the review question and the...
A customer is looking at a display of Cross gold pens and pencils. Customer: I'm looking for a graduation gift for my brother, but I'm not necessarily looking for a pen and pencil set. Salesperson: Is your brother graduating from college or high school? Customer: He is graduating from college this spring. Salesperson: I can show you quite a few items that would be appropriate gifts. Let's start by taking a look at this elegant Cross pen and pencil set....
The flight attendant had to ask her twice, “Anything to drink, ma’am?” “Oh, sorry. Water, no ice, please,” said Noelle Freeman, the CFO of Franklin Climate Systems. Watching the clouds out her window at 30,000 feet, she’d been deep in thought. She was on her way home from two days in Arkansas visiting her company’s largest facility. Franklin was in the business of designing, engineering, and manufacturing climate control systems for cars and SUVs. This is a division of FB...
