Select two linkage organizations (public opinion, political parties, interest groups, elections, or the media) and for each one explain how it carries out a democratic function AND what shortcomings it has in carrying out that democratic function.
Political Parties - It serves as a rallying
point for people of similar ideologies to come together and strive
to serve their people by the means of participating in an election.
Various objectives and ambitions of the political parties are in
one way or the other related to elections. The party just tries to
get elected so that it can implement the policies that are in
concurrence with the ideological position of the political
party.
It has certain shortcomings as a political party after coming to
party may strive to form a hegemony over the people who do not
support that political party. This is also because, within the
party, there is always a stance that the other is 'wrong'. Which
might not always be true. So, we need certain checks and balances
to ensure the correct distribution of power in a democracy.
Media - It plays a very important role in
shaping the public opinion in a democracy. It takes up the various
issues relating to the people and brings them to the attention of
the government. In short, media ensures that the political parties
and the state is transparent in all the affairs that have relation
to the lives of the people it serves.
Media can also have certain shortcomings and they usually arise
from the way in which media is owned. For example, a media house
that is owned by the state would find it extremely difficult to
criticize the state as the people who are responsible may face
certain repercussions.
